in a mutually compatible way.
Located in New York’s historic Hudson River Valley, Calderon Architecture & Design Studio P.C. consists of design oriented architects licensed in New York & New Jersey specializing in commercial and residential projects in the Hudson Valley and New York City region. Our founder, J.C. Calderón, is a graduate of Williams College and the Yale School of Architecture, current Treasurer of the AIA Westchester + Hudson Valley Chapter for the 2018-2020 term, and a LEED Accredited Professional as designated by the U.S. Green Building Council. He has worked with leading New York City firms including Kohn Pedersen Fox; Tesoro Architects; Calvin Klein; and Simmons Architects, and currently practices out of Beacon, New York.
Having a certified Minority-owned Business Enterprise, J.C. is also uniquely qualified to partner on city and government projects within the city and state. The scope of his work ranges from the design of high-concept buildings to the alteration of existing structures and includes residences as well as hotels and office developments. A featured project was in his parents’ birthplace of Bogotá, Colombia.
J.C. has guest lectured at a Yale seminar taught by architect Dean Sakamoto. He has also appeared on television, in numerous articles, and on public panels to speak about design, urban culture, and green practices.
At Calderón Architecture & Design Studio P.C., we work to deliver architecture of value. Our structures are designed to capture the nuances of the physical setting and we aim not only for the creation of a beautiful and inspiring building, but one that doesn’t leave out practicality or comfort.
Our team will listen carefully to your design dreams and work hard to translate them into reality. From historic home renovations to new construction, we seek to add value and design excellence to your project.
At the end of the day, it is important to us that our clients are happy. To that end, we stress collaboration between client and architect. We value this partnership and find it gratifying that our clients often refer us to friends and associates, as we want to contribute to the environments that enhance the lives of the people who will live and work in them for years to come.
While asking about the future you envision, our practice will bring a certain cultivated aesthetic to the table, while also avoiding preconceived ideas until we’ve consulted with you.
Our depth of practical experience provides the background to take on difficult problems and spot hidden potential. In particular, we excel at highlighting the surrounding environment by finding natural light through adding windows and/or re-configuring inner walls in order to elevate each and every project.
In the instance of a co-op apartment, we will advise you about the best ways of working with the co-op board. With regard to contractors, you can elect anything from zero involvement on our part, to complete scheduling and supervision. Either way, we’ll inspect the final result to make certain you’re happy with the final product.
In addition to delivering creative design and drawing prowess, Calderón Architecture & Design is highly skilled at procuring approvals and construction permits from the NYC Department of Buildings.
Commissions are accepted from clients in New York City and throughout the Hudson Valley.
Changing a 2-bedroom to 3
“J.C. Calderón did phenomenal work. J.C turned a large pre-war two bedroom coop apartment on the Upper West Side into a three bedroom family apartment with an intelligent design that worked for my family. J.C. spent time talking with me, my wife and even my kids. By reconfiguring the floor plan to our needs, he also creatively brought natural light into the entire apartment. During construction, the Seller’s real estate broker came by and could not believe the transformation. She said the apartment was worth over $300,000 more than I paid (about 25%) based on J.C.’s new layout alone and she had not even seen the finishes. J.C. also handled all dealings with our Coop Board’s approval process and worked seamlessly with our general contractor throughout the project. J.C. ensured that all design plans were properly filed with the NYC Department of Buildings and Landmarks so that I will have no problem when I decide to sell. He navigated this project to conclusion on time with very few bumps. He was proactive and his total price was less than the other architects I interviewed and his price never changed once we reached our agreement. I highly recommend J.C. and his team.”
“J.C. Calderón did a marvelous redesign and renovation of our 25-year old Upper East Side apartment. He went to great pains to understand and fulfill our design preferences. His understanding of light, space and color opened up the apartment both physically and visually, and the ingenious hallway cutout allowed sunlight from the corner of the bedroom to reach all the way into the kitchen.”
Developing a vision
“Working with J.C. enabled us to develop a clearer picture of exactly what it was that we wanted. He kept honing that picture and gave us a result that still gives us satisfaction and utility.”
Increasing re-sale value
“J.C. Calderón did a fantastic job with our extension. His attention to detail was amazing. The end result was spectacular. We definitely are going to see a substantial increase in our re-sale value.”
